UNIT 3: Trailer Reflection

What the project was:

The project involved turning a film genre into a different film genre by creating a short film trailer. It also involved researching a particular film genre to determine the perfect audience individual for that genre.

How I developed my idea:

I decided to turn ‘Kung Fu Panda’ into a horror trailer because it is a difficult film to genre, it involves a lot of martial arts so it breakdowns most of the genres anyway which is why I went with Horror. I did look at the film trailer ‘It’ to give me inspiration on how I could recreate an animated action film into a horror.

What research I needed to do:

I researched Kung Fu Panda’s audience statistics to find out the perfect audience individual, e.g. most popular gender, most popular age group, I had to find out why the genre of action/animation is more appealing to a certain gender or age group. I then chose a genre to research, I chose ‘horror’ and started researching on ‘BFI’ for some statistics. Finally I had to research a horror trailer of choice, I chose ‘IT’ and summarised what a horror trailer features.

How did my research influence my ideas:

The research I did influenced my ideas by adding creepy music which gives scenes a scary vibe and is a key feature in horror movies. It inspired me to zoom in on the antagonist so theres more clips of them rather than the good.

Software I used:

I used Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018 to edit my trailer

Tools I used:

I changed the colour on a few clips to make it look more darker or blue so it’s not so bright. I added a blood green screen at the end to certify that its horror film, dipped to black transitions. I used these effects to make it look more convincing.

How I exported my project:

I exported my final project in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018 as a H.264 Format and then uploaded it to Youtube. Screen Shot 2019-03-11 at 15.28.31.png

What went well?

  • Run smoothly
  • Good transitions
  • choosing a genre was easy
  • Music fitted

What I found difficult:

  • Cutting the film
  • finding parts to turn into a horror.
  • finding the blood effect.

Was it a successful piece of work?

It turned out alright, this is because it had a decent runtime and the music fitted well, it didn’t seem too horrifying so that is what I would change. The style and transitions weren’t as effective as I would have liked, I was running out of time so I wanted to make it fairly quick and simple whilst still keeping some aspects of horror in the mix.

What I would do differently next time:

  • A film which is a lot easier to turn into horror.
  • Make the trailer shorter.
  • edit the music to give it more of an impact.
